There is another school which says, a guitar should sound like its coming off the amp and the "Mixing board" effects (spatial) should be mixed in later.Ĭertainly in a live band, or practice space, when there is a lot of volume and heaviness going on the spatial effects get lost, and phasing problems can smear your sound and it gets lost in the mix. Yes, once you understand signal flow, you realise why the effects like reverb and spatial processing sound best if they appear after your guitar is preamped (where it gets some character) and really, technically after your speaker (like playing in a hall) so the guitar effects thing is tricky because its a compromise. The folks at Laney cringed at that though. I did however modify one amps reverb tank/in - out cables with jacks instead of phonos to create an extra loop for an independant external digital reverb unit, giving me two footswitchable loops at once. There are certain effects that you can't use effectively in a loop anyhow - reverse or uni-vibe/swells for example - cos u will always have the original sound mixed in.

Nowadays, being a pretty unorthadox player with time on my hands, I only use my loops as a return for my Boss AC2 - giving me the option of having a regular sound plus an acoustic simulation at once (see unusual pedalboard tips in this forum). Loops are things that make me cringe nowadays, especially after listening to old live recordings and hearing the horrible midiverb/ART (remember those) phaze problems. You know, after surviving the 80s with refrigerator racks and everything looped to death, I was glad to downsize and enjoy good the old front-end (so to speak).
